Summary:  This technical position is essential to the success of the business as it involves project estimating and customer pricing, a key role working with our Technical Sales Managers, Project Coordinators, and Engineering. The Project Estimator must be a critical thinker, able to understand and create drawings, have a strong PLC/electrical understanding, and extensive industry knowledge allowing for accurate and dependable project costing. Full-time position based in Fairmont, MN.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Act as key liaison between Technical Sales Managers (TSM) and Project Coordinators (PC) in reviewing the Site Requirements Documents (SRD), Scope of Work (SOW), and Process Flow Diagram (PFD) to help Sales create a budgetary proposal involving key items necessary to complete the project. 

  • Work to ensure Engineering has a thorough understanding of project requirements (using the SRD, SOW, and PFD).

  • Responsible for the accurate count of input/output (I/O) points when compiling an engineering estimate for a project or product.

  • Create a Bill Of Materials (BOM) using above tools, allowing a custom panel assembly estimate to be created as well as an estimate for projects and products. 

  • As a project gains clarity, maintain the estimating spreadsheet with up-to-date cost information.

  • Where appropriate, assist the TSM in efforts to close sales of Kahler products and solutions, as well as further build relationships, in all areas including liquid and dry automation, grain and LP, truck traffic control, and adjacent markets.

  • Provide second-level support for Kahler Field and Support Technicians as they troubleshoot customer issues. 

  • As necessary, provide on-site support in effort to ensure accurate estimating, including assisting in a minimum of two project start-ups each calendar year to maintain skills and real-world knowledge.

  • Regular collaboration with Engineering Manager, Marketing Manager, VP of Sales, and CEO regarding product pricing, promotion, advertising, and new product development necessary for Kahler to continue achieving objectives.

  • Prepare post-trip reports to provide feedback regarding actual on-site activity.

  • Utilize the company’s ERP and CRM software to ensure company mission is being achieved.

  • Review/create technical documentation in coordination with others to confirm consistency with program operations.

Key Position Requirements:

  • Experience with Programable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), instrumentation, pneumatics, motor controls, and motor control centers.

  • Experience as Controls Engineer or Journeyman Electrician. 5+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2+ years of PLC development work, Electrical Design work, or Field Technical support are a must.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, PFDs, and P&IDs.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documentation, and governmental regulations. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and fellow employees. Ability to effectively and clearly write reports, business correspondence, and verbally communicate.

  • Knowledge to create and use Microsoft Office documents.

  • Travel estimated be around 40% of the time but may be greater for certain projects. Customer visits may be required with overnight stays. Travel may be by automobile and airplane.
